Guide

Driving in Austria: what to check

Austria uses a time-based vignette for its motorway and expressway network, with a small number of alpine routes tolled separately.

Who needs an Austrian vignette?

A vignette is generally required for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes using the Austrian motorway (A) and expressway (S) network, regardless of where the vehicle is registered.

Heavier vehicles are charged through a separate distance-based system and are not covered by the passenger-car vignette.

  • Cars and light camper vans up to 3.5 t
  • Motorcycles, which use a separate motorcycle category
  • Rental vehicles, unless the rental company confirms a valid vignette is already assigned

Where is the vignette required?

The requirement applies to the tolled motorway and expressway network, not to ordinary regional roads. Signage at the entry points indicates where the charged network begins.

It is possible to cross parts of Austria on non-tolled roads, but journey times are considerably longer and some alpine detours are seasonal.

Vignette validity

Short-duration products run for a fixed number of consecutive calendar days from the start date. Longer products run for a defined period set by the road operator.

Digital vignettes are linked to the licence plate, so nothing needs to be displayed on the windscreen.

Vehicle categories

Categories are normally split between motorcycles and vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes. A motorhome above the weight limit falls outside the passenger-car category and uses the heavy-vehicle system instead.

How digital vignettes work

A digital vignette is a database entry against your registration number. Enforcement is carried out by camera and roadside checks, so the plate you register must match the vehicle exactly.

Because it is tied to a plate, a digital vignette cannot be moved to a different vehicle.

Common mistakes

  • Entering the plate of a different vehicle in the household
  • Confusing the letter O with the digit 0, or I with 1
  • Assuming the vignette also covers the separately tolled alpine routes
  • Buying a start date that begins after the journey has already started

Additional toll roads

  • Several alpine tunnels and mountain routes are operated under their own toll and are charged at the barrier or in advance.
  • These route tolls are not included in the vignette and are paid separately.
