Guide
Driving in Hungary: what to check
Hungary charges motorway use through a digital e-vignette, available as national or county-level products.
Who needs a Hungarian e-vignette?
An e-vignette is required for the tolled motorway network. Both foreign and domestic vehicles are covered, and enforcement is automated.
National or county product?
A national product covers the whole tolled network. County products are limited to a single county and only make sense if your entire motorway use stays inside it.
For a transit drive across the country, the national product is normally the correct choice.
Vignette validity
Short products run for fixed consecutive days; annual products follow a calendar-based window. Validity starts at the moment you specify, so buy before joining the motorway.
Vehicle categories
Categories separate motorcycles, ordinary passenger cars, and vehicles carrying more passengers or towing a trailer. A trailer can move your vehicle into a different category.
How digital vignettes work
The e-matrica is a register entry against your plate and country of registration. Keep the confirmation until the validity period ends.
Common mistakes
- Choosing a county product for a cross-country drive
- Omitting the country of registration, which is part of the record
- Forgetting a trailer surcharge where one applies
Additional toll roads
- Heavy goods vehicles use a separate distance-based system that is not covered by the e-vignette.
