Guide
Driving in Slovenia: what to check
Slovenia's road charge for light vehicles is a fully digital e-vignette linked to your licence plate.
Who needs a Slovenian e-vignette?
Vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes need an e-vignette to use Slovenian motorways and expressways. Because Slovenia sits on several main transit corridors, many drivers need one even for a short crossing.
- Cars and camper vans up to 3.5 t
- Motorcycles in a separate category
- Vehicles simply transiting between Croatia, Austria, Italy or Hungary
Where is the vignette required?
It applies to the motorway (A) and expressway (H) network. Local and regional roads are free, but the parallel routes through the country are significantly slower.
Vignette validity
Products run for consecutive calendar days or months from the chosen start date. The weekly product is the usual choice for a holiday crossing.
Vehicle categories
Categories are based on vehicle height above the front axle and weight. A tall camper van can fall into a higher category than an ordinary car, so check the classification before ordering.
How digital vignettes work
The e-vignette is stored against the licence plate in a central register and checked by camera. No sticker exists.
Common mistakes
- Selecting the car category for a high camper van
- Registering a trailer plate instead of the towing vehicle
- Buying after entering the motorway rather than before
Additional toll roads
- A small number of structures, such as major tunnels toward Italy, are charged separately.
