Guide

Driving in Switzerland: what to check

Switzerland charges motorway use with a single annual vignette, available as a sticker or an e-vignette.

Who needs a Swiss vignette?

All motor vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, including motorcycles and trailers, need a vignette to use the Swiss national motorway network. A trailer requires its own vignette.

Annual validity only

There is no daily or weekly option. Even a single transit across the country requires the annual product, which is why many drivers compare it against a non-motorway route.

Where is the vignette required?

The charge applies to the national motorway and expressway network, which is clearly signposted.

Vehicle categories

One flat charge applies to light vehicles. Vehicles above 3.5 tonnes use a separate heavy-vehicle charge.

Sticker or e-vignette

Switzerland offers both. The e-vignette is registered to the plate; the sticker must be correctly affixed to the windscreen to be valid.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting a separate vignette for a caravan or trailer
  • Buying two records for the same vehicle in one year
  • Assuming major alpine tunnels are included in the vignette

Additional toll roads

  • Certain alpine tunnels and car-carrying rail crossings are charged separately from the vignette.
