Tolls
Vignette vs Toll Road: What's the Difference?
Two charging models sit side by side across Europe. Understanding both makes route planning and budgeting much easier.

Time-based versus distance-based
A vignette buys access for a period. A toll charges for the distance actually driven, usually collected at a barrier or by an electronic tag.
Countries frequently mix the two: a national vignette for the general network, plus concession tolls for specific structures.
Which is cheaper
For long transits, time-based charging is usually the cheaper of the two. For a short section, distance-based charging often works out lower.
Planning across both
On a multi-country drive it is normal to need vignettes for some legs and to pay at barriers on others. Budget for both rather than assuming one model applies throughout.
